Life lessons... from a dog!

Writer's picture: Nicola HateleyNicola Hateley

I have found dogs to be the most amazing teachers of how we humans should approach life. As a dog owner, I’ve learned many lessons over the years from the love and teachings provided by Golden Retrievers and a Lhasa Apso.

There are many health benefits to owning a dog which can assist our wellbeing, including helping to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, ease loneliness and encourage us to be active and play.

Living with wild abandon

Dogs live life in the present moment because every day is a brand new day. There’s no time for thinking about yesterday and or worrying about tomorrow.

Dogs greet you with a smile and a swishy tail, and they are curious, fearless, and always ready for play and adventure.

Acceptance

Being curious, fearless and ready for adventure brings with it the need for acceptance. Usually water, mud or something smelly is involved and always at the most inconvenient times!

Deep breaths are required, the releasing of frustration and the practising of acceptance.

Dogs will be who they are, with no masks or pretence, as they proudly and unapologetically show up as who they are and we adore them for it.

Connection

Regular walks in the outdoors brings a connection to nature, so important for our mental and physical health and wellbeing. The exploration of new walks also brings curiousity and a sense of adventure to owners.

Meeting other owners boosts our social connection as we are brought together by our mutual love of dogs.

As the dog and owner relationship develops, the level of trust, devotion and connection deepens, bringing peace, contentment and love.

Is it time to follow their lead?!
