About Me

Hello

My name is Nicola Hateley

I founded Yasashii Healing as I recognise there are occasions in life when there are different types of help needed.  Sometimes we accept we need help but may find talking difficult; needing to be treated gently as we regain our strength.  Then the moment arrives when we are stronger and it is time to talk, to feel, to start making a plan and taking action to rebuild and improve our life.

I bring together my qualifications as a coach, trainer and assessor, and my qualifications as a Chrysalis Effect Practitioner, Reiki Master Teacher and Somatic Trauma Therapist, to support people as they seek to bring healing for themselves.

Specialising in chronic exhaustive conditions such as Burnout, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Fibromyalgia, helps me better understand the needs of those experiencing these conditions and how I can best support them as they take steps to regain their health and wellbeing.

As a registered Reiki Master Teacher delivering approved Reiki courses, I am passionate about providing quality, flexible and inclusive learning.

Reiki brings me peace and contentment, and a deep relaxation that I had never experienced before.  Reiki energy goes about its work with no talking required.  The meditative and mindful aspects that the practice of Reiki brings, both informs and defines the importance of balance, and of maintaining positive mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health and wellbeing.

Somatic Trauma Therapy enables me to work in a gentle yet proactive way with trauma and emotions that become trapped within the physical body, helping to release whatever has been consciously or unconsciously suppressed or repressed from previous life events.

I am highly attuned to the feelings and emotions of others.  By picking up on the finer details, this helps me identify how to support you and offer the most effective options to best meet your needs.

You can be assured of being listened to without judgement and in full confidence.  You will be provided with the sanctity of a safe space in which to talk, and heal, and you will be treated gently, with kindness and compassion.

Chronic Exhaustive Conditions

A diagnosis of a chronic exhaustive condition can be daunting however it can be welcome in that finally you have the

answer for the symptoms you have been experiencing.  It may be myalgic encephalitis (ME), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia, post viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS), chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID), burnout, or long Covid.

As an accredited recovery specialist with The Chrysalis Effect I can help you understand:

  • what predisposes a person to develop chronic exhaustive conditions

  • additional factors that can contribute to these conditions developing

  • the impact of trauma and emotional sensitivity

  • early warning signs and coping mechanisms

  • why you experience many different symptoms

  • the 6 different phases of recovery

  • the 8 essential key areas for rebuilding your health and vitality

  • the importance of mindset, self care and pacing.

Using a biopsychosocial approach enables a holistic view of your health and wellbeing:

  • Bio (logy) relates to physical health - symptoms, genetics, medication

  • Psycho (logy) relates to mental and emotional health - the narrative of your life so far, your beliefs and expectations

  • Social relates to interpersonal relationships and dynamics with family, friends and peers.

For those brave enough to do the deep inner work needed, I help provide clarity, awareness, and inspiration.  I keep you accountable, help you with setting goals, working to release blockages, to challenge the levels, values and beliefs you have,

Reiki

Reiki

'Reiki' (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal.

This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.  It is a tradition that is open to any belief system and benefits may include deep relaxation and the promotion of a calm peaceful sense of wellbeing.

What happens in a Reiki session?

A confidential consultation takes place first to gather information relating to the reason for Reiki being sought and also includes the recipient’s lifestyle, current health / wellbeing and medical history.  For any undiagnosed or suspected conditions, the recipient should refer to their GP before seeking Reiki as Reiki practitioners do not diagnose.  Reiki is explained to the recipient, along with expectations from this complementary therapy.

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple.  The recipient remains fully clothed and comfortably lies on a treatment couch or sits on a chair.  The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively on, or a few inches above the body using their intuition and training as a guide.  There is no massage or manipulation.  Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts of the body.

It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance if the recipient wishes to receive Reiki from the comfort of their own home.

During the session, when a Reiki practitioner places their hands on or near a person, the practitioner will often feel heat, tingling or pulsing.  The practitioner will typically be aware of areas of higher energy sensitivity, for example where the sensation (such as heat) is intensified and this will relate to areas where the body is drawing more of the ‘healing’ energy.

The recipient may experience temperature changes or tingling sensations in areas of their body.  The recipient may feel very deeply relaxed, or may drift off to sleep.  Some may experience an emotional release as their body releases suppressed memories or blockages and this may take the form of tears or laughing, which is a completely natural response.

To help ensure a recipient is completely at ease, time is taken to both explain and demonstrate what can be expected during a session, and to fully discuss Reiki Aftercare Advice after the session.

Choosing a Reiki practitioner

It is important to choose a qualified practitioner who has undertaken all the necessary training to understand the theory and practice of Reiki.

You can check whether a Reiki practitioner is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) by searching the register at www.cnhc.org.uk and select Find a Practitioner.  By choosing Reiki practitioners registered with the CNHC you can be confident they are properly trained, qualified and insured.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is a deeply relaxing therapy and may help:

Emotionally

  • bring a state of deep relaxation, and a calmer and less erratic mind

  • improve sleep

  • reduce fearful feelings

  • increase feelings of happiness, peace and self-esteem

  • make it easier to enjoy positive relationships

  • with stress, anxiety, trauma, grief, loss and other emotions

  • you enjoy life again!

Mentally

  • calm the mind and bring greater clarity of thought

  • with focus and memory

  • process and deal with situations in a balanced way

  • enhance personal awareness and creativity

  • increase self-confidence and self-image

  • you see the positives in life and not dwell on the negative.

Physically

  • reduce tension, pain or discomfort

  • support and complement the use of prescribed medication and other therapies

  • speed up recovery from illness, injury or surgery

  • those with a chronic fatigue related condition who are currently in ‘crash’ phase or experiencing ‘crash’ phase symptoms (very gentle touch or no touch).

Spiritually

  • feel more connected and in tune with others

  • increase in intuition

  • lead to a more purposeful direction in life

  • feel an enhanced overall sense of wellbeing

  • experience true peace and harmony for the first time in a long time.

Distant Reiki

An absent / distance / distant Reiki session is an incredible way of offering Reiki to a human or animal recipient regardless of whether they live a few miles away or on the other side of the world.

Recipients can enjoy the experience and benefits of Reiki as if they were there in-person, from the comfort of their own home or surroundings.

This method can be particularly useful when offering Reiki to people or animals experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety or trauma-related responses, who would struggle to travel to and relax in an unfamiliar space and / or be in close proximity to someone unknown to them.

What happens in a Distant Reiki Session?

  • A date, time and duration for the session is agreed

  • A consultation will take place with the recipient or owner / carer of animal

  • My Top Tips for Receiving Distant Reiki will help you prepare for and get maximum benefit from your Distant Reiki session

  • Approximately 5 mins after your session ends, I will contact you via text, call, email, or Zoom so we can discuss the session

  • When sending Distant Reiki to animals, sessions are observed by the owner / carer and discussed afterwards, then a written record is sent to the owner / carer.

Reiki for Animals

The support for and use of natural and holistic complementary therapies such as Reiki is increasing and as we enjoy and realise the benefits of Reiki, many people now consider this therapy for their animals.

What happens in an Animal Reiki Session?

The Animal Reiki Practitioner will gather information relating to the reason for Reiki being sought, the animal’s health / well-being, both past and present veterinary diagnoses, the animal’s previous experience of Reiki (if any) and details regarding the animal’s temperament.  Reiki will be explained, along with expectations from this therapy.

For any undiagnosed known or suspected conditions, a veterinary diagnosis should first be sought before requesting Reiki for your animal.

The Reiki session will vary depending upon the animal, their physical, mental and emotional state and the reason why Reiki is sought.  Ideally, Reiki will be offered in an environment that is familiar and quiet for the animal, and at a time where animals can feel relaxed and most at ease.

The animal is in charge and they choose whether, and if so, how much Reiki they wish to take, how they wish to receive it and for how long.

If offering an in-person session, Reiki is offered from a distance, allowing the animal to come closer and seek a hands-on (versus hands off or distant) therapy session if they wish.  Reiki may be offered hands-on, hands off (a few inches to a few feet away), remotely (typically 6-10 feet away, or slightly further) or distantly (from any world-wide location).

When a Reiki practitioner places their hands on or near an animal, the practitioner will often feel heat, tingling or pulsing. This will happen when Reiki energy is flowing from the practitioner’s hands.  The Practitioner will typically be aware of areas of higher energy sensitivity, for example where the sensation (such as heat) is intensified and this will relate to areas where the body is drawing more of the ‘healing’ energy.

When Reiki energy flows, people usually feel warmth from the practitioner’s hands and a sense of calm relaxation typically follows, although other feelings or benefits are possible, and it is believed that animals feel the same.  They certainly show signs of relaxation in many instances.   Animals appear to have a better natural understanding of this energy than us and may push their sore body area(s) into a practitioner’s hands and then move their body round when that area has received enough and another area requires attention; offering a lick or nuzzle to show their gratitude at the end of the session.

Animal Reiki sessions typically last 30 minutes to 1 hour but it depends entirely on how much Reiki the animal wishes to receive.  In some instances, more than an hour may be appreciated by the animal.

Travel costs will typically be added as Animal Reiki Practitioners usually travel to you, allowing the animal to be in a place that feels safe and familiar.

Jimmy’s Story tells the story of Jimmy, a horse based in the north of Scotland who, after receiving a series of Distant Reiki sessions, was able to release suppressed trauma.

Benefits of Animal Reiki

As with Reiki for humans, Reiki for animals is also relaxing and comforting, improving the feeling of wellbeing and sense of self.  Reiki is often offered to animals:

  • to help with stress, anxiety or other emotions (this may also benefit related issues)

  • to help reduce pain, stiffness or discomfort

  • to support and possibly speed up recovery from illness, injury or surgery

  • for general well-being

  • to support ageing animals and those at / near their end of life

  • to help relax an animal before a situation that may be stressful (their response may then be less reactive)

  • for a wide range of other situations and conditions where relaxation will be beneficial.

Many animals sleep when Reiki is offered to them.  If you think about a time when you or your animal have been ill or recovering from illness / surgery, it is common to sleep more than at other times.  In this relaxed state the body is in its best state for self-recovery and tissue repair.  When Reiki is offered it helps the body to reach a relaxed state where sleep is easier and natural healing is promoted.

Reiki supports conventional veterinary medication and treatment and must not be viewed as a replacement for it.  It can comfort animals that are passing and may assist when no other treatment has helped.

Although veterinary consent is not required, a vet’s diagnosis should be gained prior to Reiki being offered to animals when a medical health issue is known or suspected to exist.   A Reiki practitioner is not permitted to make a diagnosis.

Reiki Training

Reiki Training

Reiki is taught by Reiki Master / Teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on, in person, from Master to student.  Students go through a process of initiation / attunement to the Reiki energy.  They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a personal and emotional perspective, but also as an aid to individual development and spiritual growth.

Reiki can be undertaken by anyone wishing to learn, and at the heart of Reiki is being able to provide Reiki to yourself as a means of self-care.  The teachings enable you to adopt meditative and mindful practices to bring balance, peace and contentment.  There are no pre-requisites or barriers to learning Reiki, everyone starts at the beginning - Reiki I.

The style of Reiki I was trained in and now pass on to students is Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki.  This is considered to be ‘western’ teachings, and my Reiki lineage begins with Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.

As an experienced trainer and assessor, I am passionate about supporting people in their own development, ensuring quality, flexible and inclusive learning, whilst continuing my own professional learning and development.

Each student receives:

  • In-person Reiki attunements and practical / experiential learning

  • Comprehensive course training manual

  • Copy of their Reiki course certificate and lineage (where applicable)

  • Reiki Personal Practice Log in which to record their experiences during each 21 day-cleanse

  • Invitation to be mentored by me for as long as they wish

  • Invitation to WhatsApp group for support, guidance and sharing learning

  • Invitation to Reiki Shares

  • Reiki Supervision sessions held online every 2 months for students working towards Reiki II, Professional Reiki Practitioner and Reiki III / Master courses ~ where students can ask questions, share experiences and learn collectively.

I deliver all levels of Reiki training including the Professional Reiki Practitioner course which enable students to register with CNHC upon completion:

  • Reiki I ~ Shoden ~ First Degree   *approved course

  • Reiki II ~ Okuden ~ Second Degree   *approved course

  • Professional Reiki Practitioner ~ SCQF Level 6 / RQF Level 3   *approved course

  • Reiki III ~ Shinpiden ~ Third Degree / Master

  • Reiki IV ~ Do Shu ~ Master Teacher.

Learning Reiki is very much a personal journey and, for this reason, classes are small.  Courses are delivered weekdays and at weekends, and can be delivered flexibly in order to meet any individual needs, location etc.  Reiki Theory content can be delivered online live via Zoom if required, but all Reiki attunements and practical / experiential elements are always delivered in-person.

Benefits of Learning Reiki

  • Once attuned to Reiki, this connects you to universal energy which means you can access healing for yourself whenever you need it.  Self-healing is at the heart at Reiki practice and taking time to do this every day keeps your mind, emotions, physical body and spiritual soul in balance.

  • You may notice that you are becoming more intuitive, and that your life has a more harmonious vibe.  Perhaps you are feeling a sense of wholeness and peace for the first time in a long time, or that you are now on a new path in life.

  • You might feel less worried and stressed, and able to cope with whatever life throws at you in a calm and non-reactive way.  By working with the meditative and mindful aspects of Reiki practice they help you to live in the present moment.

  • You may be feeling much more ‘well’ within your physical body.  Reiki helps remove toxins and also helps keep our major organs and body systems functioning to an optimum level.

  • Helping others by being able to offer Reiki to them can be such a privilege, especially when you start to see the positive effect it has on them.  The feelings of compassion can be so strong when you share Reiki.

  • Reiki can help bring awareness to your boundaries, or lack of them!  It gives you the strength to start saying no, or yes, and to start enforcing or creating appropriate boundaries that are essential for your wellbeing.  By going within and enjoying the stillness you realise what is and what is no longer important in your life and for your own happiness.

  • When learning Reiki, particularly at Reiki II, using the distance and harmony symbols in your self-care treatments can clear past emotions from traumatic events.  This can help you forgive, bring closure, and move on ~ it's hard work but essential for your own wellbeing and ultimately your freedom.

Choosing a Reiki Teacher & NOS for Reiki
Choosing a Reiki Teacher & NOS for Reiki

Choosing a Reiki Teacher
& NOS for Reiki

Be aware that Distant Reiki attunements and purely online Reiki courses are not recognised by Reiki Council, Reiki membership organisations such as UK Reiki Federation, and many insurance companies.  They require attunements to Reiki and training to be carried out in-person with a qualified teacher.  Take time to choose a teacher who is right for you, find out the course Aims and Learning Outcomes, and consider how you may want to practice Reiki.

The National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Reiki, set by Skills for Health, were created to help prepare the Reiki student to run a professional Reiki practice within a public setting, and encapsulate the professional aspects of practice.  The CNHC Core Curriculum was prepared from the NOS for Reiki and this defines the training content that should be included in Reiki training courses.

The courses listed below have been independently approved as meeting the requirements of the Core Curriculum and NOS for Reiki, I undergo annual checks by Reiki Council and can be audited at any time to ensure I adhere to these standards:

  • Reiki I ~ Shoden ~ First Degree

  • Reiki II ~ Okuden ~ Second Degree

  • Professional Reiki Practitioner ~ SCQF Level 6 / RQF Level 3.

Students can register with CNHC to be listed as a professional practitioner for Reiki upon completion of the above courses provided they have:

  • Given a minimum of 75 full Reiki treatments in-person and these should be recorded

  • Been supervised carrying out 5 full Reiki treatments

  • Provided evidence of 100 treatments received (self-treatments and Reiki treatments from others)

  • Undertaken additional study, research and written assessments.

Somatic Trauma Therapy

STT

Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you.

Gabor Mate

Traumatic symptoms are not caused by the event itself. They arise when residual energy from the experience is not discharged from the body. This energy remains trapped in the nervous system where it can wreck havoc on your bodies and minds.

Peter Levine

Trauma is a chronic disruption of connection.

Stephen Porges

Trauma occurs when we are faced with a threat, and our natural response to that threat is interrupted or incomplete, which leads to the dysregulation of the nervous system.  In cases of trauma, the body can get stuck in a state of hyper-arousal or hypo-arousal (over or under-stimulated by stress).

When trauma occurs there is a disconnection of the self with the world.  The nervous system becomes overwhelmed in its ability to deal with a stressful situation and unable to apply a successful strategy.  When we are unable to do what we need to do in order to survive a stressful situation this results in an unmet biological need and leads to the feeling of overwhelm.

Trauma then becomes a survival response, an adaptation to what happened to the person.  The pain that was caused to them was so high that they needed to put in place a pattern of protection to help them survive, and to get through other similar experiences without having a similar outcome.

When trauma occurs within the nervous system, the protective barrier present in the person disappears and this leads to feelings of helplessness, loss of control and intense fear or terror, and this can result in a loss of resiliency within the nervous system.

Experiencing trauma is not shameful, in fact it demonstrates our ability to adapt to what happened to us.

Traumatic events can be:

  • a single incident or acute trauma such as a road accident, violence, sexual assault, traumatic loss etc

  • multiple / complex trauma are events or experiences that are repeated in life such as verbal, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment etc

  • historical, collective or intergenerational trauma, for example, traumatic events experienced by a large part of the population throughout history or during specific times in history:  racism, genocide, slavery, war etc

  • Little t trauma - small intensity events that are not as limiting as those mentioned above but can have an impact on a person such as divorce, moving house, losing a job, loss of a loved one.

The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Study conducted by Kaiser Permanente from 1995-1997 investigated the impact of childhood abuse and neglect and the impact on later life health and wellbeing.  The results from this study concluded that 10 adverse childhood experiences had a profound impact on health outcomes in later life, and exposure to traumatic experiences during childhood had an impact on children's brains and bodies thus impacting their ability to learn.

Direct ACEs are sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical abuse, emotional neglect and physical neglect by a parent / carer.

Indirect ACEs are parent / career addicted to alcohol / substances, child witnesses abuse in the household, family member in prison, family member with mental illness, parent / carer disappeared through abandonment, death or divorce.

What is Somatic Trauma Therapy?

Somatic Trauma Therapy is a way of working to release stress and trauma held within the body, and it helps to relieve the physical and emotional distress and dysfunction that trauma can cause.

By getting in touch with the 'feeling' sense within the body, we help the body to regulate and feel safe.  After that we can work with the orphaned parts and find the origin of the unprocessed events coming to the surface.  Then we can objectively explore internal struggles and bring integration and objectivity into processing these sensations, allowing for a shift in orientation.

The basis of this work is on guiding and tracking physical sensations within the body in a way that doesn't overwhelm the nervous system, allowing the opportunity for self regulation, trauma resolution, peace and self healing.

This therapy is based on the work of Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) and Babette Rothschild (Somatic Trauma Therapy).
